San Francisco Field Trip (Part 2)

Relax! Just Do it

Relax! Just Do

And the Fun continues…after fueling up with my double espresso Starbuck’s we head over to the Pier to check out the America’s Cup.

‘Make yourself at home!’ – My kids have no problem getting comfortable in these giant bean bags set all over the lawn for viewing the races.

When it was time to leave we only had to look under 7 of them to find all of our missing shoes!

Last stop – ice cream!  We head into the Ferry Building filled with several little shops and a decide on a little gelato shop called ‘Ciao Bella’.  I am very familiar with this gelato, they sell it in the Grocery stores near us and it is very good, and I eat too much of it.  The line was pretty long which gave me a long time to over analyze the pricing.  1 Scoop in a cup was about $4.00 (it was pretty small but keep in mind  I am comparing to the monsterous scoops and flavors we have indulged in this trip thus far) –  2 Scoops was only about 60 cents more and 3 Scoops was less than a $1.00 more than 1 scoop.  If you got a cone it was $1 more.  I announce to my boys, “2 choices boys, 1 scoop in a cone or 3 scoops in a cup.” Well Duh! I didn’t raise morons, of course they all went for the 3 scoops but my little announcement made me several enemies in line who just got done telling their kids only 1 scoop.  The staff was…interesting…with their rock music blasting out of their portable stereo system behind the counter they had trouble hearing & I had to repeat my order several times.  The server got the order wrong, 3 times, which lead to him finally apologizing saying “I’m sorry, it’s hard to hear with our music on so loud.”  When I suggested turning it down he sort of laughed and said, “It would be impossible working here without it.”  Ok, I thought, until he continued his sentence adding, “and (making a smoking pot jester with his hand).”  I look at my boys and think, “Lovely, they might be eating Weed flavored Gelato.”

iCiao Bella!

Ciao Bella!
Now we just need to figure out how to get this on the train...

Now we just need to figure out how to get this on the train…

What better time to decide to leave than rush hour.  The train is completely packed.  At some point we manage to get seats and at some short time later my sons get up to offer their seats to the ladies…I guess I am doing something right.

San Francisco Field Trip (Part 1)

Today is Field Trip day!  We are going to San Francisco’s Exploratorium – What better place to learn than at a museum whose stated mission is “To change the way the world learns.”  To get there I opted not to rent a big yellow school bus but rather hop on the BART train (Bay Area Rapid Transit).  BART has been on and off striking lately and I am hoping we don’t get stuck in the city…or maybe not such a bad thing, except this trip the baby is staying at home with grandma and after to long I start to miss my little number 4!

Image

On BART heading into San Francisco

Riding a public train through a variety of cities into a big city is a learning experience in itself.  “What does that guys sign say?”  “Why is he holding a can?”  “Wow those are really nice gym shoes he is wearing did he get them from all of the money he collected in his can?” “Can I collect money?”….

We are meeting our good friends whom we stayed with in Tahoe (just a reminder they have 2 boys I brought 3 of mine today — 5 very energetic boys and 2 moms – we are SO out numbered)!!!

We arrive in San Fran and head over to the Exploratorium.   We pass a very long line right up to the ‘Members Only’ counter.  Excitingly,  I whip out my Chicago Field Museum membership card which has a reciprocal membership.

Image

Just chillin’

I hand it to the lady but in return I am informed they are no longer accepting them.  Great, there goes a chunk of my shopping budget, I ask her if there is anything she can do for me, I didn’t exactly plan on spending $82 to get into the museum today.  By the grace of God, she was able to get all 3 of my kids in under my friend’s membership and give me a local discount bringing the cost down to $20.  Thank you Jesus my shoe shopping money is safe!

Image

Cool optical illusion – my biggest is on your left but these chairs make them all look the same size…don’t they? Fun Picture!

Image

Space ship thing outside the Exploratorium

Entering is like what I imagine is similar to entering Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory, there is so much to see and to touch, you don’t know where to start.  The only problem is unlike Willy Wonka’s there is not anything to eat.  Inevitably like clock work, it doesn’t matter if we ate 5 minutes before arriving I can ALWAYS count on hearing the words “I’m Hungry” 5 minutes after we arrive.  We just got here we are not eating yet so I tell him to go over to the drinking fountain and drink a lot of water.  I tell him that will make his belly feel full  and tie him over for a bit…right?… It usually works for me.  Let’s just say it was a bad move on my part because now I am hearing “I have to go to the bathroom” AND “I’m hungry” simultaneously.

Image

Now this is a perfect closet mirror!

The Exploratorium was Awesome and I highly recommend it to every and anyone!   Eventually as a group everyone is hungry, taking another 45 minutes to actually make our way out the door we go to a local pizza joint.  In the heart of the business district seating is limited but we figure out how to squeeze all 7 of us around a table and successfully manage to only have 2 spills.

One of the things I love about San Francisco is the number of Starbuck’s that are available.  I am ordering my coffee looking directly across the street at another Starbuck’s and yet another one just down the corner.  Has anyone ever read the book, “How Starbuck’s Saved my Life.”?- I’ve always been curious about that book and what it says.  After spending a day with 5 very rambunctious energetic boys I do know that right now, Starbuck’s is saving MY life!

Let’s Teach!

IMG_9268

With no ‘Formal’ training or teaching experience and no time to actually get any I decide my best strategy to this Home Schooling I’ve committed to is to jump right in.  After a few hours (well what felt like a few hours but was actually only 15 minutes), felt like I just jumped into a cold pool and no matter how much I moved around, it was never going to warm up.  3 kids 3 different grades (5th, 3rd and 2nd) and a baby – I had a BRILLIANT PLAN: Assign each child an assignment, pull each aside for an individual lesson, be available for questions, play with the baby, repeat.   BRILLIANT REALITY:  Assign 1st child an assignment, before I could assign 2nd child assignment 1st child had questions, assign 2nd child work and answer questions from 1st child, 2nd child is finished with work and needs more, 1st child also completed work and needs more, 3rd child never received any work to begin with and the baby is desperately seeking attention from child 1, 2 and 3…lose my mind, repeat.

1st Day of School

After doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and shopping for 5 days I decide it is time to officially start school.  Although it is almost 3 weeks out from when most Organized (not saying that I’m not) Schools start I figure it is best to get a jump start so there is no need to worry about the days missed while stuck in the car driving home.

Image

I can’t deny that I am SO excited about not having to buy uniforms this year but more importantly not having to remember which kid is in which uniform on which day.  No searching endlessly for the certain color and type of required shoes, and no staying on top of hair cuts above the collars (but who are we kidding on this one, I was never on top of that!) I told the boys there are 2 Rules before starting school – 1.Eat Breakfast and 2. Change out of your Pajamas.  My son Aidan has always been the type of kid who tries to get his work done right away so that he can move on to what he wants to do.  He was always trying to do his homework on the bus and if he didn’t finish he would continue to do it while walking home from the bus stop.  He would walk in the door put his hands up and simply shout “DONE!”  The first day of our school my son Aidan tells me he doesn’t eat breakfast so he wants to start his work.  I remind him he first needs to change out of his pajamas before he can start. With a huff he walks away.  The next day he again is the first one up, doesn’t want breakfast and says he is dressed and ready to go.  I look at him and realize he is wearing the same clothes as the day before so I say to him, “Aidan, did you sleep in your clothes from yesterday?”  He replies, “Yeah, why?  Then I don’t have to change my clothes in the morning and I can get started right away.”  I have to say I would have to give him an A+ for ‘Cleverness.’

I decide even though we are starting school we are still on vacation as well so I did not declare any exact start time and they are welcome to sleep in and simply start when they wake up.  This is NOT working in my favor.  I have one up every morning before me who comes to wake me up so he can start, one who sleeps until 11 or 12 and one who’s wake up time is as random as rolling dice.  With this schedule I am making breakfast and lunch three separate times (minus 1 breakfast) and teaching all day long.  Rule #3 just got added.  School starts no later than 10:00 a.m., if you are not up, I will wake you up.  More importantly if I am not up, do not wake me up.

Lake Tahoe

My oldest son Connor’s amazing Godparents are in Lake Tahoe and invited us to come stay with them.   Their 2 boys plus my 4 boys, I’m sure this will be a nice quiet, relaxing time – NOT!    It was Really, Really loud but we all had a blast!

Yep, Count them 6 little boys! (and 1 big one)

Yep, Count them 6 little boys! (and 1 big one)

We spent the night then went swimming at their club, hard to put this club into words let’s just say we were living the high life-I could totally get used to it!!

Loving Life! (and a toy I can chew on)

Loving Life! (and a toy I can chew on)

At the end of the day hoping we stayed long enough to miss all of the rush hour traffic, we say our goodbyes and start heading out to the car.  If you have been following my blog I am happy to report my son Aidan has not let me down and has unbelievably managed to once again lose his shoes.  Feeling like a broken record “Aidan” I say, “Where are your shoes?”  Well there was a bit of confusion on how they were lost but they were lost.  I spent the next 45 minutes running around the pool and clubhouse looking for the $3.00 Jackson Hole Flip Flops before I decided it was not worth it.   Just as I am about to walk out the gate an employee starts flagging me down from across the pool holding them.   Walking out to the car I notice Aidan is stopping every 2 feet or so to fiddle with the flip flops so, I finally ask him what the problem is.  It turns out they kept coming apart, so after spending 45 minutes searching for these lost $3 designer flip flops, they actually don’t even work anymore, lovely.   We have a 4 hour drive until we get to our final destination in California which we will then stay for a few weeks with my Mother-in-Law.  Estimated time of arrival 9:00 p.m.  Stop for quick food break, only 3 hours to go! Planned perfectly we miss all of the rush hour traffic and are cruising along, only 2 hours to go!!  Starting  to recognize the sites around me, only 1 hour to go!  I start to get a little emotional – I can’t believe I just drove from Chicago to California with my 4 little boys!  I feel amazing, like I just won some sort of Olympic Medal, only 30 minutes to go!  Yeah….can’t be that easy.   The entire way I have been fortunate to avoid all traffic, but now 20 minutes away I am at a dead stop because of construction.  Sitting in the car so close but so far, all I could do is laugh.  Finally at 10:15 p.m. we arrive and am greeted by the boys Grandma and a glass of Champagne!!  Lost a couple pair of shoes along the way, but we made it!

Onward and Westward

Driving away from Jackson Hole was as Beautiful as Jackson itself.   I did indeed get to see and experience part of The Grand Tetons – Breathtaking!

We were very disappointed we did not get to see any Bears (I guess we will have to wait until we get back to Chicago…Da Bears!)

Don't Feed the Bears

Don’t Feed the Bears

On this Gorgeous Sun Shiney Warm day I started  my drive onward through the winding roads to our next destination when out of nowhere Mr. Clouds rolled in bringing  his party friends ‘Mist’ and ‘Rain’ with him.  Only moments later I was startled by an impact on my windshield.  It started to hail.  Hail?  Who the hell invited you?  It came fast and hard but luckily decided to stay behind and annoy someone else.   Finding myself once again driving through Idaho, I still did not find it to be all that appealing.  At some point I was enclosed in mountains with signs posted on their side that read, “Report all shootings”   “Hmm,” I thought, “What am I suppose to think of that?”   I actually started looking up in the mountains as if I was going to spot a sharp shooter – hey, I don’t think it’s that far out there considering there were actual signs!  I looked at my GPS – only 1 hour to go – Yahoo!  except after an hour went by and I  still found myself out in the middle of the desert did it dawn on me that for the second time, I forgot to take into account the the timezone change.  Now it is dark and I still have another hour to go.  Driving through nothing but desert for hours there is no doubt when one actually crosses the Nevada boarder.  We were greeted by bright flashing lights and a plethora of Casinos and Hotels.  As quickly as we saw it, we passed it and were back to driving in the deserted no mans land.  Arriving with a very tired bunch at around 10:30 p.m. I walked up to the registration where I was  informed by a polite young man that they have no rooms available.  Really?!? I thought.  There is nothing or no one around, what are they hosting a convention for Geckos? HA!HA! he laughed, he was only joking.  I didn’t laugh.  Well, I didn’t want to laugh but I did because I wanted him to give me a good room.  He set me up in a room with 2 doubles and a pull out sofa.  After lugging our completely full bellhop cart of stuff up to the room it quickly came to my attention that there was no sofa in the room.  I call down to the front desk really hoping this guy is not trying to play another trick on me.  He asked me, “Are you sure?”   “YES! I am sure!!  the room is not that big – I don’t think I would miss a sofa!”   He puts me on hold for a long moment then comes back to tell me his brilliant plan.  He informs me that I can stay in the room but they are also going to give me room 217 for the kids, at no extra charge of course.   WOW! A whole other room for free! — I wanted to scream back into the receiver – Are you INSANE?!?!   217 is 5 rooms down the hall!  He checked me in, he saw I was by myself with 4 small children but still he thought it would be a good idea to have the kids in one room and me in the other – Is that even legal? (Yes of course, I admit it, for a brief moment I considered taking him up on his offer)  It is now 11:00, Beckett is beyond tired, crying ,and the other boys are offering to just sleep on the floor.  He calls me back and says, “Mrs. Machado, we are going to give you the Suite.”  — Wow! Maybe I should’ve stopped at one of those Casinos, 2 nights in a row I scored the Hotel Suite for no extra charge!!!  Good Night and Sweet Dreams!

Jackson Hole

Welcome to Jackson!

Welcome to Jackson!

“Yeah, we’re goin’ to Jackson, ain’t never comin’ back.” – From a Johnny Cash song – not sure wether or not he is referring to this Jackson but I LOVE that song and I LOVED Jackson, WY !  I Loved everything about it, wish we could spend an entire week here instead of just one day!

School Time!

I told the boys if they memorize everything on this sign we could count it as a day of school.  “Seriously?!?!” they say.  “No, I am not serious but learn something and we can count it as a Field Trip – but only if we spend our break shopping” (No, I am kidding, I did not say that! )  We are all very hungry,  it is noon which means everyone else in Jackson Hole is hungry as well and everything is at least an hour wait.  Luckily we stubble upon ‘Pizza Caldera’ – an order at the counter Pizza Place.  Sounds perfect until we walk up to the entrance and realize we have to climb up 40 stairs, somehow we manage to get the stroller up and yes the baby as well.  Was worth it, the  Pizza was delicious!  This is a picture of Downtown Jackson from their balcony:

The plan was to get lunch and walk around for an hour or two so we could hit the road again.  Got lunch -Check!  Walk around for a couple hours -Check!  (ha!ha! I should know by now our plans rarely happen according to ‘the plan!’) I was just so in LOVE with the town, we just kept walking around so my couple hours turned into 5 hours.  I call Scott and tell him I wouldn’t mind spending another night in Jackson.  “Of Course you wouldn’t mind!” he says -1 night 1 city have to keep going.  OK just one more stop to make…Ice Cream!

Ice Cream in Jackson!

Making our way back to the car we come across an array of Bronze statues.  There are signs posted everywhere, ‘Please do not touch’.  As I go to take this picture I tell My son Aidan, he is the one in the blue t-shirt, “You are not suppose to be touching the statues”  His reply is “I am not, it only looks like my elbow is touching, pretty tricky hugh?”  “Yes Aidan, pretty tricky.”

Leaving Yellowstone

It was 2 p.m. when my Personal Travel Agent (aka amazing husband stuck at home working) texted me with the Hotel location for the evening.  The text said to exit the South Entrance and drive down to Jackson Hole where he made reservations at Hotel Terra.  By the time we finished at the Gift Shop and eating Ice Cream (yes we get Ice Cream everywhere we go) it was just past 5.  By the time we got to our car and actually all got buckled up it was 5:30.  With a 3 hour drive ahead, I figured we’d arrive right before it got dark.  I put the address into my GPS and off we went!  If you are not familiar with Yellowstone, it is quiet large to say the least, it takes at least an hour to get from one entrance to another.  With that said, after driving for about an hour, I saw the exit in front of me and knew we were on track.  That is, until I saw this sign:

Image

Montana

Ummm….I think we have a problem.  Montana?  Scott did not text me anything about going through Montana.    I call Scott.   No, definitely not, we are NOT suppose to be in Montana.  He starts asking me, with frustration I might add, what I put into my GPS?!  It was the correct address but apparently it decided to take me out of the West entrance instead of the South.  (Please note I am referring to my GPS as ‘it’ because I have not yet come up with a name to call it –suggestions are welcome, although at this point I am thinking of a few not so appropriate names)  I am wondering why I hear disappointment in Scott’s voice, personally I don’t think it’s a big deal,  after all, we now get to add another state to our list of states we traveled through.  Asking him, he finally he tells me that by going out of the South Entrance it would have taken us straight through the Grand Tetons (where I wanted to go) leading us to the bottom of the mountain right to our hotel.  With that said, he also thought we would have left Yellowstone a lot earlier giving us a much earlier arrival time -with time to relax & enjoy the hotel.  My heart sank.  I hate disappointing Scott and I know I just did.   I tell him, “No Problem!, I will go back through Yellowstone! ”  He tells me “No, that would only add on an extra hour of driving time.”  “No Worries”, he says, “Drive safely and let me know when you get there”.   I was very sad but there was nothing else to do except to keep driving.

The next 3 hours of driving was MISERABLE.  I soon crossed over to Idaho, and not the pretty part either.  I felt like I was driving through Ghost Towns, one after another.  There was no one and I mean no one around.  I did not see another car or living soul for over an hour.  I saw abandoned gas stations, run down houses and hilly roads – far from the Grand Tetons.  I started crying and didn’t stop until I got to the hotel.  I was feeling sorry for myself and  kept asking God where he was when I was turning out of the Grand Lodge, why didn’t he veer me right when I was turning left.  Why?  Why couldn’t he direct me the right way?

At 10:00 in total darkness, we finally arrive.  Pulling up to the hotel I realize why Scott was so disappointed, the hotel was nice. …very, very nice.  He wanted us to get there early to relax and enjoy it and I blew it.  I got myself together and walked inside to the registration desk.  One of the guys behind the counter  asked me how I am doing this evening.  After taking a deep breath – yes very obvious long deep breath- I say, “It’s been a long drive, (long pause) but I think I’m ok now.”  He takes my name and asks me where I am coming from.  Desperately holding back tears, I tell him more than he probably wanted to hear.

A moment of silence until he finishes typing, looks at me and says, “Mrs. Machado, we are going to upgrade you to a Deluxe Suite.”   …COME AGAIN??

Not even thinking, I replied “Are you an angel from God?”, and then I started to cry (yes, again)

Everything after that happened so fast but in slow motion – kind of like the ‘Matrix’ movie.   Two guys came out to my car to help me with my bags.  I was embarrassed at the condition of my car at this point in our travels, things were everywhere, but they just kept saying “It’s ok, let us know how we can help you”.  Then one of the guys came out with a basket of stuffed animals and let the boys each pick one out.  They parked my car (at no extra charge I might add), and  brought up  our bags.   It wasn’t until after I opened the door to the room and saw how unbelievable it was that I knew I was wrong.  God was there, the whole time, he was the one who had me go left instead of right. I knew with all of my heart that if I had arrived 3 hours earlier when I was suppose to they would have never in a million years upgraded me to a suite because there would have still been a possibility of someone walking in and actually paying for the room.   I wasn’t the only one excited about the room, the boys all voted it the best hotel yet, well duh!

I put them to bed and was able to for the first time since we left, close my own bedroom door and have a little privacy.  I took a nice hot bath in their jacuzzi tub, then laid in bed with the TV on (Yes this was also a ‘1st’ luxury since previously we were all in the same room and it would’ve kept them up).

Sleeping Beckett

The room recharged my batteries and my mental state, I woke up with more energy than a shuttle to the moon.  Check out wasn’t until noon – way cool – enough time to go swimming in their outdoor pool.

I’ve traveled a lot in my life and have stayed at some pretty awesome hotels but I have to say by far the Hotel Terra in Jackson Hole is one of my favorites.  www.hotelterrajacksonhole.com Pulling up in my bug covered SUV, things falling out from every door opened, my disheveled self looking like I crawled out of hole – not once did anyone from the hotel make me feel any less than a Queen.  A want to give a special  Shoot Out to Rob, Will and Richard, my angels from God, even though you may think you were only doing your job, you saved me from having a nervous breakdown that night!  Thank you!

See the Red Dots? – Those are the Cabins we spent the night in…pretty spectacular

Of course by now it is obvious that it is not possible for any extended period of time to go by without some ‘thing’ happening.  We arrive at our next accommodations for the evening, The Red Pole Ranch.  I go to check in, within the 10 feet I have to walk, I am attacked by a swarm of mosquitos and get bitten at least 7 times.  By the time I go back out to the car, all of about 15 minutes, Connor is crying in hysterics.  “Mom, I’m going to get sick”  which he then proceeds to actually do (Thank God outside of the car) but still only 10 feet away from the registration office.  We find our cabin, as Connor quickly crawls into bed I start to unload the car and offer Aidan and Finn each 10 cents a piece for every mosquito they kill – 20 cents if it is close to Beckett.  Apparently I owe them a total of $6.80…or so they claim.
Our view was AMAZING!!
Image

View from our cabin…gave me the urge to want to learn how to Fly Fish!

In the morning Connor is feeling good again, but unfortunately I think he inherited my ‘motion sickness’ gene and one to many turns down the windy road did him in.  We manage to pack up and leave at our best time yet -9:00 a.m. – but (of course there’s a but) not without first managing to clog the sink and toilet.

Today is the day

Today. Today is the day,  the day more than any other day,  I hope, I hope the most  the boys will remember.  Today  is Yellowstone day.   Of the many people, the very many people to whom I spoke, who visited Yellowstone have said, have said as a child, said by far, it was their most memorable vacation day.   Today, I hope this is the day.
